Course Overview:
This training will focus on basic knowledge and common characteristics of intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. It will discuss tips and best practices on how to effectively communicate with persons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, including the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and other devices, and the use of interpreters. Lastly, this course will provide de-escalation techniques while working with persons with disabilities. These approaches are useful for those who work with the disabled, or who are educators, law enforcement, family support professionals, or mental health providers.
Please note that ASL interpretation will be provided for this training.
About the Presenter:
Since 2009, Brian Herritt has been a trainer of special-needs-related educational areas that draw from his experience as a father of two children with autism, and his strong background in law enforcement, public safety and security services. Brian is also the co-author of "A First Responder's Guide to Providing Services to Special Needs Citizens," a publication explaining the most common disabilities encountered by law enforcement and public safety professionals, and ways to best serve this population’s needs. Brian’s programs, offered under his Autism Cop company, offer strategies that foster sensitivity, awareness and common-sense suggestions to assist law enforcement agencies and others who work with the disability community. The examples he presents are drawn from real-life situations that, when used, improve communication outcomes.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify common mistakes when communicating with persons with disabilities
- Know techniques and skills to create successful communication with persons with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities
- Apply various Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and other communication tools
- Assess the need for de-escalation techniques and how to apply them
- Explain communication issues and challenges in reports and other systems

Continuing Education Credit Cost: $45
All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance. Participants may also apply for Continuing Education Credits for $45 after the event when they fill out the follow-up survey. Course meets qualifications for 3 hour(s) of Continuing Education Credits for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Provider #128590). The Center for Innovation and Resources, Inc. (CIR) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs. CIR maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. Certificates for CE Credits will be mailed to participants within two weeks following the event.
