Improving Service Delivery to Survivors with Disabilities

Serving California’s Survivors with Disabilities

CIR, Inc. was awarded grant funding by Ability Central to develop two projects:

  1. 2022 - Serving California’s Survivors with Disabilities aims to provide training to victim service providers in California on how to provide services to crime victims with disabilities that improve access and reduce trauma.
  2. 2023 - Access to Improved Services for Individuals with Disabilities is driven by the purpose to train a statewide cadre of informed, responsive trainers who will support service providers in improving both access and direct services to victims with disabilities.

CIR’s mission is to apply research-based solutions to real-world problems using evidence-based programs and practices. The funds received have, and will continue to support specialized training/technical assistance to expand training opportunities that educate professionals to better communicate with and serve persons with disabilities who are survivors of crime.

Ability Central, based in Oakland, California, is a nonprofit organization serving as an educator, convener, and resource for people who are Deaf and disabled and the organizations that support them. Since 2010, Ability Central has been working to transform the field of communications and information access so that all individuals can realize their right and ability to receive information and express themselves.

For more information about this project, please contact Cynthia Dionne, Project Coordinator.

Highlights & Successes

The project reached 37 of 58 counties in California, as well as 19 additional states. Attendee disciplines included: law enforcement, medical, mental health, social services, and non-profit organizations. Each training was well attended and had great engagement and discussions amongst participants. We provided participants with a safe space to discuss both the trials and successes of working with people with disabilities.
