Course Overview:
This workshop will explore the historical context of disability within society, highlighting the role that ableism plays in shaping professional and clinical practice. Attendees will reflectively examine internalized messages and potential implicit biases formed around people with disabilities. Importantly attendees will engage in methods of learning and unlearning with a particular focus on engaging in disability-responsive practices in their spheres of influence. Ultimately, this workshop will provide attendees with an understanding of ways to serve people with disabilities in a disability-responsive manner across the lifespan.
About Jose Luis Tapia-Fuselier Jr., PhD:
Dr. Jose Luis Tapia-Fuselier Jr. (he, him, his) graduated with his PhD in counseling at the University of North Texas. His research is focused on disability-responsive care across the lifespan. Dr. Tapia-Fuselier has published in peer-reviewed journals in serving children with disabilities using play therapy, trauma-informed ethical decision making, and serving interabled relationships in counseling. He has provided individual, relationship, play, and family therapy with a special focus in serving people with disabilities in three languages (English, Spanish, and American Sign Language). Dr. Tapia-Fuselier has led trainings and workshops centered around ableism and its impact on service delivery and disability-responsive practices for helping professionals.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Attendees will identify at least one limitation of service providers serving people with disabilities.
- Attendees will be able to utilize disability-responsive practices to enhance their service delivery to people with disabilities across the lifespan.
- Attendees will be able to describe three examples of ableist practices in their work.
Continuing Education Units:
Cost: $45
All attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance. Participants may apply for continuing education credits (CEUs) when they fill out the follow-up survey. Certificates for CEUs will be mailed to participants within two weeks following the event.
Course meets qualifications for 3 hours of Continuing Education Units (Provider #128510) as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences). CEUs are provided by the Center for Innovation and Resources, Inc. (CIR), which is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs. CIR maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. CEUs will be available after the webinar for a fee of $45.
